For most Briggs and Stratton engines used in karting, the model, type, and code numbers are located on the air shroud. The model number tells a mechanic many things about the engine; its displacement, whether it is a horizontal or vertical shaft, the type of starter, and other things. The type number tells things about the application of the engine such as the muffler type, fuel tank, and sometimes even the type of equipment the engine was installed on. The code is sort of a serial number. It also tells when the engine was built. The table below gives information about engine model numbers. The chart and pictures below show model, type, and code number locations for most Briggs engines used in karting.

One engine commonly used for kart engines is a 132232. This designates the engine as (13) Cubic Inches; (2) Basic Design Series 2; (2) Horizontal Crankshaft w/ Pulsa-Jet Carburetor & Pneumatic or Mechanical Governor; (3) Ball Bearing, Flange Mounting, Splash Lube; (2) Rewind Starter
